In order to minimise energy consumption the maximum possible evaporator temperature is used to meet customer requirements. This has a double benefit: as well as reducing A/C power it also reduces the amount of PTC heater energy needed to reheat air to the desired discharge temperature. Cabin A/C provides two functions: dehumidification of incoming air (for mist prevention and comfort), and temperature reduction (for comfort). In order to determine the maximum allowable evaporator temperature a control algorithm has been developed which calculates the maximum evaporator temperature for each function and takes the lowest value as the overall target.
The system has no humidity sensor; therefore some assumptions are necessary to determine the maximum evaporator temperature to prevent misting. Referring to Figure 4, evaporator target temperature is determined depending on ambient temperature as follows:
