The Indian council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) set up an All India Soil Survey Committee in 1953 which divided the Indian soils into eight major groups. For ease of understanding and comparative study, this post about the 8 soil types is prepared in tabular form, highlighting the key differences.

  • Alluvial soil is major type of soil found in India and covers about 42% of the landmass and the rover basins like the Ganga, Yamuna, Brahmaputra, Godavari , Krishna. It forms the most fertile soil for cropping and is rich in organic matter, found in northern plains.
  • Red and yellow soils are formed by the weathering of crystalline metamorphic rocks due to the iron content and cover about 18.5% of the surface area of India.
  • Found in Chhattisgarh, and Andhra Pradesh, most of Tamilnadu, and bit portion in Madhya Pradesh, and other parts of south India.  Suited to pulses, and millet and tobacco.
  • Black soil that covers about 15% of the Indian plate is soil rich in Potash, iron, calcium, and aluminum. Limited to the Deccan traps and lava formations.  Good for cultivation of cotton.
  • Mountain soil is mostly found in hilly and mountain tracks and covers about 8% of the landscape of the entire Himalayan region in the north and the east. Soils are loamy, clayed, and good for tea plantations.
  • Arid and sandy soil are those that are found in the great desert regions of thar and are not suitable for agriculture.
  • Lateritic soils are those soils that account for 5% of landscape and mostly used in making bricks. They are rich in iron and aluminum. Suite to coffee, rubber and coconut.
