When we moisten a slice of bread and place it in a plastic bag in a dark place for 2-3 days, we notice the following-

  1. On the surface of the bread, a light hairy growth appears.
  2. Bread mould is the name given to this hairy growth.
  3. This mould on bread is actually a fungus.
  4. The fungus spore is being blown by the wind and will eventually reach the surface of the bread.
  5. When the spore reaches the bread surface, it begins to grow by utilising the nutrients and moisture in the bread.
  6. Fungi belongs to the species Mucor.
  7. It has sporangia and a filamentous body.
  8. Sporangia burst open, allowing spores to spread.
  9. It eats in a saprophytic mode because it lacks chlorophyll.
  10. Saprophytic nutrition refers to the mode of nutrition in which organisms feed on dead and decaying matter.
  11. This is how fungi consume nutrition.
