Explanation:

Aim of the Activity :-

To test whether the solution of water and quick lime is acidic or basic .

Materials RequireD :-

A beaker , quick lime , water , a dropper and litmus solution .

Procedure :-

Take a beaker and pour water in it.

Carefully take a small amount of quick lime ( CaO ) and add to it.

Stir them carefully .

Allow the solution to rest for some time .

Now with the help of a dropper add the litmus solution ( red) to it.

Observations :-

Quick lime reacts vigoursly with water to form Calcium Hydroxide .

The reaction involves release of heat energy .

After the addition of litmus solution , the red color of litmus changes to blue .

The Reaction of water and quick lime is ,

\boxed{\red{\sf CaO + H_2O \to Ca(OH)_2 }}

CaO+H

2

O→Ca(OH)

2

Inference :-

The Calcium Hydroxide is basic in nature as it converts red litmus Solution to blue .
