Take some crystals of copper sulphate in a beaker. Dissolve them in 50ml of water. A blue coloured solution is obtained. Put an iron nail in the solution and keep it there for 15-10 mins. We observe some colour change in it. a) Why does it happen? b) Write a chemical equation for the same.

Answer:

Because of displacement reaction.

Iron nail consists of the element iron which is more reactive than copper for which it displaces copper from its aqueous soln and forms Ferrous sulphate ( Green vitrol) which turns the soln blue to green and copper for which a brown coloured coating is deposited over the iron nails.

Reaction is as follows -: Fe(s) +Cuso4(aq) -≥Feso4(aq)+Cu(s).
