An object that is more dense than the liquid it is in will sink to the bottom. The ice cube is less dense then the water so it will float on the top. The ice cube is more dense then the ethyl alcohol so it will sink to the bottom.
It floats because it weighs less than amount of water it would have to push out of the glass if it sank. Wood, cork, and ice are all less dense than water, and they float; rocks are more dense, so they sink.
a stone will definitely fall down because the buoyant effect will not be able to exert a force as stone is much denser than water....
