Taking the example of an element of atomic number 16,explain how the electronic configuration of the atom of an element relates to its position in the modern periodic table and how valency of an element is calculated on the basis of its atomic number.

(16) = 1s^2 2s^2 2p^6 3s^2 3p^4

the element is of P block as last electron lies on it

it is of group no 16 as valence electron = 6
so if V.E is greater than 2 we take it as group no by adding 10

it is of period no. 3 as no of shells=3 (K L M)

it is a non metal as it lies in P block
