tan a= - sqrt(3)+2 and - sqrt(3)- 2. i.e. tan a = -3.732 and 0.268 . On check by substitution only 0.268 satisfies the eqn. quadratic solved.

tan a= -3.732 tan a= 0.268 both satisfy the quadratic. a= -75 deg or 15 deg. I dont know what a general solution of a quadratic is.
