In 1957, Herbert Taylor worked on the roots of faba beans.

  • The roots of Vicia faba were given radioactive thymidine which would allow them to incorporate radioactive DNA in the root cells.
  • After confirming the presence of radioactivity in the DNA, the roots were supplied colchicine.
  • The F1 generation displayed radioactivity in each chromosome.
  • However in the F2 generation, one of the chromosomes had radioactivity and the other was normal.
  • This proved semi-conservative replication nature of the DNA.
