Technology has proved both boon (bonus) and bane (distraction) for man. If it has made his life comfortable and convenient, it has also made him dependent and disease prone.
Bonuses
There are many facets of technology. Technology has many benefits as well as disadvantages. Technology is helpful to us in many ways. If we look at productivity from industrial and manufacturing point of view, technology has enhanced the productivity immensely. For example, in auto-industry, heavy vehicles and machinery manufacturing, electronics goods manufacturing, technology has done miracles. Companies produce goods faster and more efficiently. Similarly in all other fields such as defense, education, medicines, agriculture, mining, fishing, infra-structure building, IT sector, and many more technology has enhanced productivity.
Technology has the potential to solve all of man’s problems and challenges provided it is put to right use. But this potential is not being explored. Man is busy misusing technology. For example, our planet earth has so much of Uranium, Thorium, Plutonium, etc. that if used optimally, abundant power can be generated for all the people living in all the countries of the planet. The sad thing is man’s focus is on creating deadly nuclear weapons out of these wonderful resources given to him by beneficent Nature.
All the problems pertaining to pollution, environmental degradation, etc. can be solved using technology. All the cities of the world can be converted into smart cities using technology; all the vehicles that emit toxic gases can be converted into zero emission vehicles using technology; all the sewage, garbage, effluents, toxic fumes coming out of chimneys can be turned into non-polluting substances using technology. However this is being done only in the most advanced countries of the world.
Distraction
Technology has given man many machines and gadgets such as smartphones, computers, tabs, TV’s hi-tech cars, and many more. More often than not man has been misusing these machines and gadgets. Mobiles have become a source of major distractions for the students. Young boys and girls seem to have become inordinately addicted to these sites. They are thoughtlessly and uselessly wasting their precious time on these useless sites.
The overuse of mobile has posed serious health issues. Radiation caused by microwaves emitting from network towers as well as mobile phones, eyesight getting affected due to exposure to mobile screen for hours, etc. are some of the health issues. Besides, mobile phones are also responsible for difficulty in concentration, fatigue, headaches and sleep disturbance that can further trigger health complications. Owing to late night use of mobile phones, the youngsters skimp on sleep which further causes health consequences. This has made them aggressive and irritated.
The other major disadvantage of the increasing use of such networking sites is the spread of obscenity. This is having a very negative impact on the impressionable minds of our young children and leading them astray. The parents, teachers and the government must look into the problems being caused by mobiles and these networking sites and must formulate a strategy either to curb or completely stop its fast growing negative influence on the minds of our youth. Our youth is the future of our nation. We cannot allow this youth to waste their precious time on mobiles doing the Facebook, Instagram, and Youtube. The same time must be spent on studying, researching and developing leadership or other life-skills. In the same manner man has been misusing cars and other machines also. It is our duty to use the technology for the right purpose and self-improvement.
