Shakespeare has very wisely said: “There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so.” Similarly, pocket money itself is neither good nor bad; however, how we use it makes it good or bad. I strongly believe before giving pocket money to children, we must teach them the value of money along with the wisdom of using it wisely and judiciously.

We must teach them that earning money honestly and spending it frugally is far more important than just thinking about money. We must teach them the laws concerning money. We must reveal them the limitations about money. We must make them familiar with the following maxim: "Money can buy you a bed but not sleep. Money can buy you a clock but not time. Money can buy you a book but not knowledge. Money can buy you a position but not respect. Money can buy you medicine but not health. Money can buy you blood but not life."

So we have to teach them the right perspective to handle money very carefully. It should be used exactly like a fire as a means to ends. It should never be made an end itself. As excess of fire burns the food, similarly we must not go after excess of money. Only as much is sufficient as fulfills our needs. And most importantly, we must teach them to earn their share of money through hard work—as the saying goes ‘through the sweat of thy brow.’
