Tell me about Mitochondria.

• Mitochondria:-

Mitochondria differ in shapes in different cells like cylindrical, rod shaped, spherical, etc. They are 6-10 times smaller than nucleus. They are also known as powerhouse of the cell. Mitochondria are present in the cytoplasm of all eukaryotic cells.

• Functions of Mitochondria:-

i) Mitochondria play an important role in the process of respiration of cell.

ii) They are the respiratory centre of the cell. It releases energy in the form of ATP (Adenosine triphosphate).

iii) They become the energy source of the biological activities of the cell.

iv) They helps in synthesis of amino acids and steroids.

v) Due to presence of genetic material, they divides and genetic characters are transferred from one generation to another.

=> Mitochondria is a part of cell organelles.

=>They work to make ATP they make ATP with the help of glucose and this process is known as cellular respiration.

=> They divide by binary fission.
