Hey !

It may be noted that visual indicators are not the only means to check whether a substance is acidic or basic simply by change in colour.

There are some substances whose odour changes in acidic or basic solutions. These are called Olfactory Indicators.

The commonly used Olfactory indicators are raw onion and vanilla extract. Just visual indicators change colour in response to acidic or basic solution, an olfactory indicator will change either it's odour or odour intensity with change in acidic or basic nature of the solution.

For eg :- We can test the change in odour of raw onion with acidic and basic solution.

Answer :-

It is a substance whose smell varies depending on whether it is mixed with an acidic or basic solution.

It is used in the laboratory to test whether a solution is a base or an acid.

Thank you! ❤
