Given :

Four resistances are connected as shown in the figure.

To Find :

Equivalent resistance between A and B.

Solution :

First of all we can see that two equal resistances of 1Ω are connected in parallel.

  • The reciprocal of the combined resistance of a number of resistance connected in parallel is equal to the sum of the reciprocal of all the individual resistances.

➙ 1/r = 1/R₁ + 1/R₂

➙ 1/r = 1/1 + 1/1

r = 1/2 Ω

Finally three resistances r, R₃ and R₄ comes in series. Hence net equivalent resistance between A and B will be;

➙ Req = r + R₃ + R₄

➙ Req = 1/2 + 2 + 3

➙ Req = 0.5 + 5

Req = 5.5 Ω

(D) is the correct answer!

☆Answer☆

We have two resistance connected in series and two in parallel.

Series Connection

R1 = 2 Ω

R2 = 3 Ω

• R equivalent = R1+R2

= 5 Ω

Parallel Connection

R3 = 1 Ω

R4 = 1 Ω

• 1/R equivalent = R3+R4

= 1/1+1/1

= 2/1

R equivalent = 1/2 Ω

We have,

5 Ω and 1/2 Ω is now in series.

Total resistance across A and B

= (5+1/2) Ω

= 5.5 Ω

Hence, the effective resistance between A and B is 5.5 Ω.
