The author asked this question to Nicole because he always saw Nicola and jacopo in town and work clothes and are just simple food so. Although doing so much work they did not spend little on themselves so there author was curious to know and asked Nicola the following.

The author wanted to knew what nicola did with the money he earns by selling wild strawberries,newspapers and working so hard from early morning to late night because he was curious to know what they used to do with money they earn because they didn't spent them on themselves
