Lord Canterville was the owner of the Canterville Chase. He was the great grandson of Sir Simon d Canterville. He was a very honest and practical man. There are two instances in the novel that corroborate his honesty and practicality. Firstly, when Mr. Otis approached him to buy the Canterville Chase, he told him the truth about the chase without hiding any fact from him. He told him all the scary incidents that happened at the Chase in the past. He also tried to warn Mr. Otis of the consequences he might have to face on account of his decision of living in the haunted chase. The second time he showed his practicality was when he refused to accept the valuable jewellery that the ghost had gifted to Virginia. He refused to take them saying if he did take them, the ghost would make his life hell. He was a very wise man also. He had taken the decision of not continuing to live in the Chase.
