It is an endocrine gland found in the vertebrate brain.

Structure :

It's shape and size is like a pine nut and so it's name is.

Location :

It is located in the epithalamus, which is near the center of brain, and in between the two hemispheres where grooves of thalamus join.

Function :

It's main function is to produce melatonin. Melatonin regulates the sleep pattern and also many important function in Central nervous system. In some amphibians and reptiles it is also known as third eye since it is linked to light-sensing organ.
