The bushmen live in bands. Each bands contents of several families. There is no ruler, but skilled Hunters and the other people obtain have more influence and decisions. Is group has its own territory , which no other group can use.
The Kalahari, where the bushmen live, is a desert with very little water on the surface. The regions get all its rainfall between December and March, while the rest of the year is dry. Due to the scarcity of water, the bushmens neither grow any crops nor raise any animals. They are hunter gatherers. They dig up wild tubers and roots, pick wild fruits and vegetables, and hunt animals for food. Game animals includes antilopes and birds, and reptiles such as tortoise that survive on desert plants. Birds eggs especially ostrich eggs , are also eating. Rainwater and dew are carefully collected and Store often in containers made from the empty cells of ostrich eggs. Water from Damp ground is sucked up with reed staws and stored.
The bushmen make tools and weapons from wood, reeds , bones , gives etc . They use Bows , poison arrows, snares , throwing sticks and sometimes spairs of hunting.
The kalihari has hot weather for a major part of the Year. All through the winter months of June and July are cool and frosty, the summer temperature are very high, Austin around 50°C. Hence, the bushmen usually dress scantily. They are closing is made of animal skin. Usually a man wears only a loincloth , and a woman wears a long garment called kaross. The kaross is tied with a belt with the waist and knotted at the Shoulders so as to form a pounch at the back. The pouch can be used for carrying a baby or food and water containers. Bushman usually go barefoot, but sometimes they wear leather sandals. The wear jewellery made up of ostrich eggshells beads .
To find food and water in their barren territory, the bushmen have to shift home quite often. Hens their homes are usually small, dome shaped, temporary hunts made up of branches and covered with grass. These are called scherms.
As animals have become scarce in the Kalahari ,the bushmen are now relying more on gathering than on hunting. Many have given up hunting and gathering, and have found other means of Liveihood. For example, in Ghanzi , Botswana , many bushmen from the central Kalahari game reserve are now working on cattle ranches (large farms where cattle are reared) . The Government of Botswana has also given many bushmen new homes in village build for them outside their traditional territories. This has been done to help the bushmen improve the quality of life..
