let the speed of boat in still water be X and that of stream be y

Now,

according to the equation,

32/x -y + 36/x + y = 7.... (1)

40/x - y + 48/x + y = 9..... (2)

Let 1/x - y and 1/x + y =p and q.

32p + 36 q = 7

40p + 48q = 9

Mmultiply question first and second by 4 and 5, we get

192p + 160 q = 36

180p + 160 q = 35

using elimination method, we get

then value of P = 1/12

Putting the value of p in eq. 1 we get

q = 1/8

compare it with 1/x-y and 1/x+y

X + y = 12

X - y = 8

so,

x = 10 km/hr

y = 2km/hr
