Let Bim be x years old 10 years ago:

Bim = x

Sam = 2x

.

Current age:

Bim = x + 10

Sam = 2x + 10

.

Given that their ratio is 3 : 4

3(2x + 10) = 4(x + 10)

6x + 30 = 4x + 40

2x = 10

x = 5

.

Find their current age:

Bim = x + 10 = 5 + 10 = 15

Sam = 2x + 10 = 2(5) + 10 = 20

.

Find total age:

15 + 20 = 35

.

Answer: Their total age is 35

Nice question !

Here is your answer which you are searching for

Let the present age of Bim be 3x

Let the present age of sam be 4x

Ten years ago , Bim was half of sam in age

=> ( 3x - 10 ) = \frac{1}{2}  ( 4x - 10 )

=> 6x - 20 = 4x- 10

=> 2x = 10

=> x = 5

Total of their present ages

=> 3x + 4x = 7x = 7 . 5

=> 35
