Find the time taken for the travel:

3.5h - 2h 15 min = 3.5 - 2.25 = 1.25h

Let x be the amount of time take to walk

Time taken to ride = 1.25 - x

Walking:

Distance = Speed x Time

Distance = 2x

Riding:

Distance = Speed x Time

Distance = 40 (1.25 - x)

Since the two distance are the same:

2x = 40 (1.25 - x)

2x = 50 - 40x

42x = 50

x = 25/21 hour

Find distance:

Distance = Speed x Time

Distance = 2 x 25/21 = 2.38 miles

Answer: The house is 2.38 miles away from the theater.
