Because the amount of dissolved oxygen in the water is much less than the amount on land,so they have to breathe more in order to get more oxygen
oxygen concentration is much more higher in air,which is about 21% oxygen,than in water that's why the aquatic animals breath faster than terrestrial animals.I hope this much will help you.
