Who are the magi ? why are jim and della referred to as the magi in the story?

The magi are referred to as the Wise Men or Kings, were in the Gospel of Matthew and Christian tradition, a group of distinguished foreigners who visited Jesus after his birth, bearing gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.   I think Jim and Della are referred to as the magi because they are wise.
