Given:

Ratio of Terry's bank account to Faye's bank account = 3 : 5

Terry puts in £200

Faye withdraws £300

The have the same amount in the bank

To Find:

The amount they each have in the account initially

Solution

Define x:

Ratio of Terry : Faye = 3 : 5

Terry = 3x

Faye = 5x

Solve x:

3x + 200 = 5x - 300

2x = 500

x = 250

Find the amount that they have initially:

Terry = 3x

Terry = 3(250)

Terry = 750

Faye = 5x

Faye = 5(250)

Faye = 1250

Answer: Terry has £750 and Faye has £1250
