Test for presence of bile salts in urine is a classic test performed in liver function test in Biochemistry department of any hospital.
Experiment:
2 clean and dry test tubes are taken.
In one of the test tubes 2ml of sample is added. 2ml of distilled water is added to the other test tube.
A pinch of Sulphur Powder is added to both the tubes and observed.
Observation:
Sulphur Powder floats in the test tube containing water. Whereas Sulphur Powder settles down in the test tube containing the sample.
Conclusion:
Sample contains Bile salts.
Explanation:
Bile salts is an excellent surfectant. It reduces the surface tension of the solution and hence the Sulphur Powder settles down in the test tube.
But, it was not so in the case of the other test tube containing water . Due to higher surface tension, Sulphur Powder still floats.
