Mainly there are two tests to distinguish betwen benzaldehyde and benzoic acid which are sodium bicarbonate test and litmus test.

Explanation:

Test - 1

  • Benzaldehyde doesn't react with sodium bicarbonate whereas when we react benzoic acid with sodium bicarbonate then it will produce a brisk effervescence.
  • And hence we can clearly distinguish between the two compounds. Reaction is given below.

      C_6H_5COOH + NaHCO_3 \rightarrow C_6H_5COONa + H_2O + CO_2

Test - 2

  • This will confirm that it is the presence of benzoic acid.
  • For benzaldehyde, if it does not change into any colour we conclude that there is no presence of benzaldehyde.

Benzoic acid + Blue litmus paper\rightarrow turns to red.
