ii) It can be caused by nuclear fission, nuclear fusion, or both.
Nuclear explosion:
A nuclear explosion is energy being released from a very fast nuclear reaction. It can be caused by nuclear fission, nuclear fusion, or both.
it's occurrence:
This is known as a chain reaction and is what causes an atomic explosion. When a uranium-235 atom absorbs a neutron and fissions into two new atoms, it releases three new neutrons and some binding energy. This causes a nuclear chain reaction.
types of explosions:
- Air burst
- High-altitude burst
- Underwater burst
- Underground burst
- Surface burst.
Air burst :
An air burst or airburst is the detonation of an explosive device such as an anti-personnel artillery shell or a nuclear weapon in the air instead of on contact with the ground or target.
High-altitude burst :
High-altitude nuclear explosions are the result of nuclear weapons testing. Several such tests were performed at high altitudes by the United States and the Soviet Union between 1958 and 1962.
Underwater burst :
An underwater explosion (also known as an UNDEX) is a chemical or nuclear explosion that occurs under the surface of a body of water.
Underground burst:
Underground nuclear testing is the test detonation of nuclear weapons that is performed underground. When the device being tested is buried at sufficient depth, the nuclear explosion may be contained, with no release of radioactive materials to the atmosphere.
Surface burst :
When a nuclear bomb is detonated close or on the ground, it produces radioactive fallout.
- Surface burst detonations are most effective in creating high amounts of concentrated damage to the area close to the ground zero of the bomb detonation.
