Let the number of boys = b

number of girls = g
______________________

mean mark of boys = 42

sum of total marks of boys = 42×b = 42b

mean mark of girls = 45

sum of total marks of girls = 45×g = 45g

Total marks of boys and girls = 42b + 45g
______________________

You are given than mean of boys and girls = 44

so total marks of boys and girls = 44×(b+g) = 44b + 44g

But we know that total marks = 42b + 45g

=> 42b + 45g = 44b + 44g

=> 45g - 44g = 44b - 42b

=> g = 2b

=> 2b = g

=> b/g = 1/2

=> b : g = 1 : 2

Ratio of number of boys and girls is 1:2

Answer:

1 : 2

Step-by-step explanation:

Let the number of boys be x and the number of girls be y.

Given that mean marks of boys and girls are 42 and 45.

∴ Total marks of boys = 42x.

∴ Total marks of girls = 45y.

Given that Mean of all students = 44.

Now,

⇒ (42x + 45y)/x + y = 44

⇒ 42x + 45y = 44(x + y)

⇒ 42x + 45y = 44x + 44y

⇒ 44x - 42x = 45y - 44y

⇒ 2x = y

⇒ x/y = 1/2

∴ Number of boys/Number of girls

= x/y

= 1/2

= 1 : 2

Therefore, ratio of boys to girls is 1:2

Hope it helps!
