The series takes place at the Gokuldham Co-operative Housing Society, an apartment complex in Powder Gali, Goregaon East, Mumbai (also known as Mini India) and centers around the members of Gokuldahm Society. The Gada Family consists of a successful businessman Jethalal Champaklal Gada, his father Champaklal, his wife Daya Gada and their naughty son Tipendra "Tapu" Gada, who is the leader of his friend circle called "Tapu Sena".

Getting fed up of regularly hearing the complaints of the society members about the menace created by his son, Jethalal decides to call his father Champaklal to keep an eye on Tapu, but the opposite happens, and he joins hands with Tapu. Most of the episodes are based on Jethalal being stuck in a problem and Taarak Mehta, his best friend whom he calls his "Fire Brigade" helps him out of it.

The show covers topical issues that are socially relevant. The residents of Gokuldham face daily life problems and find solutions for it but with a moral value in a hilarious manner. Although Gokuldham Society consists of 50 flats the show mostly focuses on the lives of the families, that are of; Jethalal Champaklal Gada, an Electronic shop owner from Bhachau; Taarak Mehta, Jethalal's best friend and a famous writer from Rajasthan; Aatmaram Tukaram Bhide, Gokuldham Society's only secretary, and a tutor from Ratnagiri; Dr. Hansraj Hathi, an overweight doctor from Bihar; Krishnan Iyer, a junior scientist from Chennai but has a Bengali wife; Roshan Singh Sodhi, a Punjabi garage owner having a Parsi wife and Popatlal Panday, a bachelor journalist from Bhopal, a news reporter from Toofan Express. They always help each other in their problems, to promote Unity in Diversity.

The members of Gokuldham celebrate all the festivals together like a family-like Ganesha Chaturthi, Janamashathmi, Independence Day, Diwali, Navratri, New Year, Christmas, etc and organises various events. The responsibility of organising these events is often on Tapu Sena's" arms.
