I am not sure how each vegetable seller calculate total price in mind as it may vary by seller to seller based on their experience and level of education.

However, in my opinion, easiest way is that they memorize prices per kg and their 1/2, 1/4th and 1/10th as these are the most common weights in which they have to deal with.

And in order to memorize the prices they do not need to put an extra effort because they sell different quantities of each items multiple times in a day and after few transactions, they memorize the prices of each item at different weights.

Example: A vegetable seller with very low level of education memorizes the price per kg, per 1/2 kg, per 1/4 kg and per 1/10 kg.

A customer came and ask for items A-500 gm, B-250 gm, C-300 gm, D-750 gm and E-125 gm. Now the seller will just add…

price of 1/2 kg of item A,

price of 1/4 kg of item B,

thrice the price of 1/10 kg of item C,

thrice the price of 1/4 kg of item D and

half of the price of 1/4 kg of item E.

He need not to do complex calculations, he just need to add those numbers. That’s it.
