Question :

A man is observing a pole of height 55 foot. According to his measurement, pole cast a 23 foot long shadow. Can you help him to know the angle of elevation of the sun from the tip of the shadow ?

Answer :

Length of the pole = 55 foot

Length of the shadow = 23 foot

Let the angle of elevation of sun be θ

Ratio of pole and shadow = tan θ = Length of pole / Length of shadow

⇒ tan θ = 55 / 23

Using θ = tan⁻ ¹ ( tan θ ) we get,

⇒ θ = tan⁻ ¹ ( 55 / 23 )

Therefore the angle of elevation of sun is tan⁻ ¹ ( 55 / 23 )
