The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle is a Sherlock Holmes story written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, is part of the collection of ‘The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes’.

Sherlock Homes called a ‘Hat’ as a prize that belonged to Peterson, the security guard. He says this because the hat has somehow come in the hand of Peterson through some funny incidence.  

Peterson, who was an honest man, while walking home after attending a small party, had come across a squabble between a tallish man with a hat who was carrying a white goose over his shoulder and a group of hoodlums. One of the thugs had knocked the tall man’s hat off. In order to defend himself the tall raised his stick accidentally smashing a shop window behind him.

Peterson had come forward to defend the stranger from the thugs; however, the tall man who was upset for having broken the shop window and when he saw Peterson he had thought that Peterson was a policeman since Peterson was wearing his security guard uniform. In panic the tall man dropped both the hat and goose and ran off.

The thus too ran away and Peterson was left with the old hat and the goose. Not knowing what to do, Peterson had brought hat to Holmes to help him find the owner of the hat and goose. Since Holmes had not found the owner’s details until then, the hat was with Holmes which he referred to as Peterson’s prize.
