☆☞ Elsie Brown was an American author. She wrote many short stories, including “the shady plot" - a hilarious story about a writer, his possessive wife, an Ouija board and a ghost named Helen of Troy, New York.She died in Oklahoma November 11, 1965. ... Elsie Brown was an American author.

☆☞ Elsie Brown, 97, passed away on December 7, 2011. She was a long time resident of Deerfield and more recently of Granite Ledges , a continuing care facility in Concord. Mrs. Brown was loved and admired by all for her very active life and vibrant personality, up until suffering a stroke Dec. 1.


☆☞ Mrs. Brown was born on Aug. 7, 1914,in New Bedford, Mass. She was the fifth of seven children.Her school years were spent in Westerly, R.I., and she graduated from the University of Rhode Island in 1937. At the university, she was a star athlete and president of her sorority, Chi Omega.

☆☞ She majored in home economics and had careers as a dietitian, a home demonstration agent and worked for the Federal Farm Security Administration. In Massachusetts, she met her husband, Joseph T. Brown.


☆☞ They were married on Aug. 2, 1941. The Browns lived in Brockton and Concord, Mass., before retiring to the Brown Family Farm in Deerfield. A popular resident of the town of Deerfield, Mrs. Brown was active at the Philbrick-James Library, a frequent blue ribbon winner for her breads, jams and floral arrangements at the Deerfield Fair and a contributor of numerous papers and artifacts to the Deerfield Historical Society. Although Mr. Brown died in 2002, she remained involved in all of these activities, combining them with intense interest in her family.


☆☞ Mrs. Brown has three daughters: Susan (Mrs. John F. Smith) of Villanova, Penn.; Janet (Mrs. Roger W. Ritch) of Duxbury, Mass., and Nancy (Mrs. Herbert G. McKinney) of Deerfield. In addition to her daughters and their husbands, she is survived by eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.


☆☞ A memorial service for Mrs. Brown will be at the Deerfield Community Church, 15 Church St., Deerfield at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 17. A reception will be held after the service in the church fellowship hall.


☆☞ In addition, for those unable to attend the memorial service, the family will be gathering at the family farm on Friday, Dec. 16, from 7 to 8 p.m. The burial will be private.


☆☞ Two special funds have been established in her name. If you wish, you may send contributions to the Philbrick-James Library and/or the Deerfield Community Church, P.O. Box 420, Deerfield, 03037, in lieu of flowers. The church and library are both located on Church Street in Deerfield.

☆☞ The Bennett Funeral Home of Concord is in charge of the arrangements.

She is buried at Fort Coffee Cemetery in Spiro, Oklahoma.
