A tragedy is an event that is extremely sorrowful. It is often associated with permanent changes in people’s lives because of one event.
Causes of grief in a person's life
People grieve due to many reasons like:
- chronic illness
- unexpected turn of events
- a permanent disability
- a lost opportunity
- the death of a family member or a close friend
The effect of grief on the mental and emotional state
- Increased sensitivity
- Developing a negative perspective about everything in general
- Restlessness
- Irritability
- Inability to effectively register or respond to communication
- Becoming forgetful
- Inability to focus on anything
What measures should be taken to get out of it
- Focus on the positive side- When I lost my father, I made a conscious effort not to cry. I focussed on the positive side of life- like him not having to suffer much, my mother being financially secure, his having spent so much time with us, and so on.
- Talk it out- Instead of crying in grief, express it in words. Talk to a friend or a relative. You can also write your feelings down. You will feel much better.
Conclusion
Grief is an inevitable part of life. We will all have to face it at some point or another, but we can choose how we want to deal with it. We can either let it ruin our lives completely, or we can find the strength to support others going through the same grief and come out stronger ourselves.
