The 6th and 8 th terms of an ap are 12 and 22.Then its second term

Let the first term be a and common difference be d .

∴ SIXTH TERM = a + 5d = 12......(i)

EIGHTH TERM = a + 7d = 22.....(ii)

(ii) - (i)⇒ a + 7d - a - 5d = 22 - 12

⇒ 2d = 10

⇒ d = 5

Putting d=5 in (i)⇒ a + (5 × 5) = 12

⇒ a + 25 = 12

⇒ a = -13

∴ SECOND TERM = a + d = (-13) + 5 = -8

HENCE,  SECOND TERM = -8
