Step-by-step explanation:

let father's age be x and his son's be y

according to first condition:

x-8=5(y-8)

x-8 = 5y-40

x-5y= -40+8

x-5y=-32 ---------(1)

according to second condition:

x+8=2(y+8)+8

x+8= 2y +16 +8

x-2y=24-8

x-2y = 16 ------------------(2)

now using elimination method

x-5y = -32

x-2y =16

- + -

--------------

-3y = -48

hence y = 48/3

y= 19

so age of his son is 19 yrs

putting this value in eqn 2

x-2y=16

x-2(19)=16

x-38=16

so, x=16+38

x=54

hence the age of father is 54 yrs.
