3 years ago, age of father = 5x - 3

According to the question,

5x - 3 = 8(x - 3)

5x - 3 = 8x - 24

-3 + 24 = 8x - 5x

3x = 21

x = $\dfrac{21}{3}$

x = 7

Present age of son is x

=> 7 years

Present age of father is 5x

=> 5 * 7

=> 35 years

∴ The age of son and his father is 7 years and 35 years respectively.
