The age of grandfather is 3 times the age of the middle grandson.

Given:

  • The age of the grand father is the sum of his three grandsons.
  • The second is 2 year younger than first one and the third one is 2 year younger than the second one.

To find:

  • What will be the age of the grandfather?

Solution:

Step 1:

Write the equations.

Let the age of grandfather is 'x' years.

Ages of three grandsons are a, b and c respectively.

Age of elder grandson: a years

Age of middle grandson: b years

Age of younger grandson: c years

So,

\bf x = a + b + c...eq1 \\

Step 2:

Write the age of grandfather in terms of one grandson.

As

b = a - 2...eq2\\

and

c = b - 2 \\

So,

c = a - 4 \\

Thus,

put the values of b and c in eq1

x = a + a - 2 + a - 4 \\

or

x = 3a - 6 \\

or

x = 3(a - 2) \\

or

\bf x = 3b \\

Thus,

The age of grandfather is 3 times the age of the middle grandson.

According to the question;

The age of the grandfather is the sum of his three grandsons.

The second is 2 years younger than the first one.

The third one is 2 years younger than the second one.

now,

let the age of grandfather be x.

let the age of 1st grandson be a.

let the age of 2nd grandson be b (a -2)

let the age of 3rd grandson be c ( b -2 or a -4 )

now, according to this

x = a+b+c

x = a + (a - 2) + (a-4)

x= 3a - 6

x = 3(a-2)

x = 3b

hence, the grandfather's age is thrice of 2nd grandson.
