The anus is the term for the entrance of the rectum to the outside of the body via which stool or feces departs the body.

  • Food materials pass through the digestive system, which is made up of organs, where they are ingested, digested, absorbed, and expelled from the body as waste.
  • The mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, and anus are the five main parts involved in the digestive system.
  • The cecum, colon, rectum, and anal canal are the four main parts of the large intestine.
  • Food that has only partially been digested by the small intestine travels from the cecum into the colon, where water, certain nutrients, and electrolytes are eliminated.
  • From this, the undigested food enters the rectum which stores the stool from the colon.
  • The stool is then passed to the anus which has two sphincters.
  • Anal sphincters control bowel/stool movements.
  • The stool is eventually expelled from the body through the anus.
