Solution :

Let the age of a be 8x

Let the age of b be 5x

Sum of the ages = 39

8x+5x = 39

13x = 39

x= 39/13

x= 3

Therefore, the age of the a = 8x = 8 × 3 = 24

The age of the b = 5x = 5 × 3= 15

After 9 years :

Age of a = 24+9 = 33

Age of b = 15 + 9= 24

Ratio of the ages of a and b = 33:24=11:8
