Given :

U 235 fissioned to operate  10 kW nuclear reactor.

To Find:

Mass of U235 required to operate 10kW nuclear reactor

The Fission of a  U235 nucleus releases 200MeV of energy.

A nuclear reactor is to be operated by using energy released from fission of

U 235 .

fission of 1 nucleus = 200MeV energy

fission of X nucleus= 10kW

1 eV= 1.6 × 10^{-19} joules

fission of 1 nucleus= (200)10^{6}(1.6)(10^{-19} )

                              = 320 ×10^{-13} joules

N(320 ×(10^{-13})  = 10000

N = 31.25×10^{13}

no of molecules = no. of moles ×avagadro number

n = 5.15×10^{-10}

n× molar mass = mass of U235

5.15 (10^{-10} )(235)= m\\m = 1.2 (10^{-7} ) kg

Mass of U235 required is equal to 1.2×10^{-7} kg
