Hydrogen can form oxides and halides like alkali metals..also it has only one electron in its outermost electrons hence it should have been placed with alkali metals but since it has high ionization enthalpy and can also gain only 1 electron and is a gas like halogens therefore it is best placed separately in periodic table...
