Given :

The annual rate of growth of population of a town is 12%

To find :

If its present population is 156800, what it was 2 years ago?

Solution:

Let the population two years ago was x

The annual rate of growth of population of a town is 12%

So,Population after 1 year = x+0.12x=1.12x

Population after 2 years = 1.12x+0.12(1.12x)=1.2544x

So, its present population is 156800

So,1.2544x=156800

x=\frac{156800}{1.2544}

x=125000

Hence population 2 years ago was 125000
