let the length is x

than , width is x - 8

now, area of rectangular garden => l × b

384 ft^2 => x [ x - 8 ]

384 = x2 - 8x

x2 - 8x -384 =. 0

x2 -24x + 16x - 384 = 0

x [ x - 24 ] + 16 [ x - 24 ] = 0

[ x - 24 ]. [ x + 16 ]. = 0

if we take, x - 24 = 0

x = 24

and, if we take , x + 16 = 0

x = - 16

  • we can't take -16 as length because length never in negative. so, we take x = 24 as length

x = length = 24 ft

and , x - 8 = width = 24 - 8 = 16 ft
