Let the base be x cm.
a/c to the question, altitude= x+7
area of a triangle=1/2*base*height
30=1/2*(x)(x+7)
x²+7x=60
x²+7x-60=0
This is a quadratic equation in x.
Solving by splitting the middle term,
x²+12x-5x-60=0
x(x+12)-5(x+12)=0
(x-5)(x+12)=0
Thus x is either 5cm or -12cm.
As length can not be negative,
x=5 cm
Thus the base of the triangle is 5 cm.
