Define x:

Let x be the shorter of the parallel lines

The other parallel lines = x + 6

Solve x:

Area of a trapezium = 1/2 (a + b) x h

168 = 1/2 (x + (x + 6) ) (8)

168 = 4(2x +  6)

42 = 2x + 6

2x = 36

x = 18 cm

Find the length of the parallel sides:

one side = x = 18 cm

the other side = x + 6 = 18 + 6 = 24 cm

Answer: The length of the parallel sides are 18 cm and 24 cm
