The Area Sales Manager of a sales team of 11 members is 40 years old and the SR. TSI is 2 years older. If the ages of these two are excluded, the average age of the remaining team members is one year less than the average age of the whole team. What is the average age of the team?

Given:

  • Age of the Area Sales Manager is 40 years.
  • Age of the Sr. TSI is (40 + 2) = 42 years.

Let the average age of the rest (11 - 2) = 9 members be x. Then their total age is 9x years.

Total age of 11 members is

= 9x + 40 + 42 years

= 9x + 82 years

Therefore the average age of 11 members is

= (9x + 82)/11 years

When the age of the Area Sales Manager and the age of the Sr. TSI are excluded, their average age be x years.

By the given condition:

(9x + 82)/11 = x - 1

or, 9x + 82 = 11x - 11

or, 2x = 71

or, x = 35.5

Therefore the average age of the team members is

= (9 * 35.5 + 82)/11 years

= 36.5 years.
