the atomic number[z] is actually the no. of protons in the atom [nucleus]of an element.the no. of protons = the no. of electrons which is why the atoms are electrically stable.protons are positive in charge whereas electrons r negative in charge.thus no.of p=atomic no.
                  no. of e=no.of p
              therefore,
                  atomic no.=no.of electrons
