The atomic number of 'silicon' is 14' and electronic configuration of the element is :-

K=2

L=8

m=4

That means in first shell 2 electrons are there, 8 electrons are present in 2nd shell, and 3rd shell has 4 electrons.

According to the electronic configuration the valency will be +4 or -4 because silicon needs 4 electrons more or lose 4 electrons to make it's outer shell saturated. Therefore we can say that the valency of silicon is 4.
