Jerome k. Jerome meant that he cannot stand watching someone else work and himself relaxing. He would always do the work instead or at least 'show' them how it is done. He says this in a sarcastic manner.

The poet either means he is enthusiastic and energetic in his nature and like to do his work by himself so as to do it right. Or the poet may have used it as sarcastic device.
